With a MP you would have to invest in a Sonnet SSD PCIe card (or equivalent, see OWC), to have the same kind of performance. The main difference is disk access speed. I don't know if it is worth the money spent to upgrade, Processor, Ram, SSD x2 (preferably), vs an iMac. I have a 2003 G4 IMac that i still use, but not for day to day work. I sympathise with the fact that modern Mac portables are not user upgradable, unfortunately the ones that can be upgraded are now vintage. Apple will probably release security updates for a while. I plan on upgrading the processors to the highest allowed. I see 2010 single core (4 core) Macpro's go for around 500 and older 2010 dual core (8 core) go for around 700. Eon Timer 2.7.
